===[COMMITED]=== Iber Shooting Range.

ha, nice!

I was moving away from the AoE2 tower+range combo, and more back towards the AoE1 sprawling range (better view of targets and shooting stalls). As far as functionality goes this looks great. Perhaps make the tower look less like the Defense tower so the purpose of the building isn't muddied. I'll publish some 'recongnition shapes' for each of the new buildings so they remain recognizable at a distance between civs, if you'd like to continue helping with these, of course. I'm not happy entirely with the shape of the spartan buildings either so ill be prompt with that.

good work, back view next time too!

Yeah it would be nice to share the design with a similar shape. Maybe the tower could stay because the iberian are a defensive/tower civ. Maybe not.

If you do this buildings, they would be useful for the main game if they are included, but if not they, for modders. Kudos.

Here is a variant.  I kept both so they can be used as variation by modders, I upload everything after then.

Here is backview :) Sure I'm interested, I have been for six years :)

Yeah coherence could be nice.

I was afraid it would look too fortressy from the back, but it doesn't look so bad, has that nice strong Iberian look to it, and the open face horseshoe shape which is what I'm looking for with the archery ranges

Red is required building/wall yellow is for architectural embellishment/additions. I think the range shape is unique enough, stables have the persian precedent and can hold its own fairly easily, but I'm having second thoughts about the siege workshop layout. it could easily fall into both the barracks and blacksmith layouts. The emphasis on the 'garage' is going to be what saves it most of the time, though i could push the garage into the left corner and have a strip of workshops along the back and right side and it would be able to hold its own through outline alone

thoughts?

The lego principle

However, we made a big mistake, which we didn’t notice right away. All buildings in Age of Empires II have their characteristic shapes and sizes. Although the market was “roughly” following the proportions of the existing markets, it wasn’t close enough, and it felt like the buildings stood out too much. Back to the drawing boards, where we analyzed the existing sets to turn all buildings into basic blocks. Playing with LEGO as it were

That's an interesting concept.

I do want to emphasize how nice this looks, the TLC shows. You have a knack for celtic/iberian architectural embellishment

Awww thanks. You do have one for helenistic buildings yourself :)

About this, I must admit I got a bit confused ^^ Long day.
What are those footprints ? three different buildings ? Stable, Siege Workshop, Shootingrange ?

Those are the basic shapes I would like for the stables, siege workshop and archery range to follow respectively. If all of the buildings of similar function are of a similar shape, then (especially once freshly implemented) players will be able to recognize the buildings between civs at a distance, without the need to zoom in and look at the props, like how the 0 AD barracks follow the AoK format, and are easily recognizable as a result.

normally this wouldn't be much of a problem, but we're going to be adding a lot of 'military training buildings' and things could get confusing very quickly for a new player. Making these variations easily recognizable at any distance is a must now.

One thing that this range does better than the Spartan one is show the targets to the viewer at the standard building position. I think the spartan one should be rotated 180 degrees so that the targets can be seen. :victory:

But you also have to remember the civ, Stan. The Iberians don't have archers, at least not as a standard unit, so the projectiles embedded in the targets should be javelins, methinks. :)

Misiles range.

In Spanish archery range is called galleria de tiro (con Arco).

So this is Galeria=Long gallery.

shooting gallery

Tiro means shot.

Yeah, I initially planned to have both when I made it, that's why there was a dummy in the background.

@LordGood Btw it would be nice that the blue lines on the dummy would be player color.

hm, thats right, I guess mirroring the 'lego' proposal on its x and keep the tower to the corner like you have would show off the targets more readily.

So no change needed to my shape ?

May be. How complicate is learning archery? for a villager

Learning is easy, Mastering is hard. Ex archer here.

I guess there are also technically theoretical 'archers' in the towers. ooh that's something, imagine if the archery range was a village phase prereq for towers and fortresses?

Sounds good.

i did really like those targets, and yes we'll be following your shape stan, maybe a little more squat in future iterations and with the tower being more of an option than a distinguishing feature

Btw it would be nice that the blue lines on the dummy would be player color.

I can get behind that, Iberians are sorely lacking in playercolor options aside from the banners and vases

Brought the targets back <3

I honestly think targets would be better than dummies. The dummies could be used in barracks while targets used in archery ranges. Another distinguishing characteristic. Just a suggestion. the targets just in general look way cooler too.

That separation looks like a very good idea.

I liked them a lot too, I just wasn't sure on what people would practise javelins, Usually you would do that without any target.

Indeed. Would be nice though to unify it with other civs, so they all benefit from the player color.

That shooting range looks really nice! And yes, ranged units were specialists: archery and slinging were skills which require years of practice (boys trained from early childhood); accurately hurling a javelin is much easier and could be learned in weeks or maybe days. On the other hand, non-mercenary melee infantry (especially hoplites) were typically untrained amateurs. (The famous Spartan Agoge training included dancing, singing, sports, chasing hares and clubbing them to death, etc, but not spear fighting or phalanx warfare.)

Furthermore, it's great you're discussing adding cavalry stables and siege workshops. Hopefully you can also create elephant stables for all relevant factions. (And maybe a sacred band barracks (cart) and royal guard barracks (mace, ptol, spart), cf. AoE's Academy.)

The bracket stuff would be overkill

I think we should have the basics: Barracks, Ranges -  Infantry, Stables - Cavalry, Elephant Stables - Elephants, Siege Workshops - Siege
