Help Please-- Units moving too fast!

Hi, I'm really new to this game, I played it a couple times a year/ish ago, got a different computer, downloaded it again recently and I'm loving it so far. However, contrary to most people, who seem to have problems with lag, mine goes way too fast. Like, everything in the game works normally until about 20- 30 minutes in; then, suddenly, all of my units start moving at lightning speed! The game speeds up so much that I can barely even click on any units due to them moving so fast... I lost one of my last games just because the units were moving so quickly I couldn't direct them, and when I got attacked by the enemy, the battle was over before I could even do anything!

Is this normal?? Is there a setting to adjust unit speed, or do they speed up naturally as you go from town/city etc.?

I wouldn't mind them going quickly, but this is unbelievable. :)

By the way, I'm NOT computer savvy at all, so please be patient with me.

Thanks.

Does it happen after a certain event (town or city phase upgrade, hero creation, ...)? And can you reproduce it every game?

Hmm. I don't think it happens after a certain event, once it happened during town phase, another during city phase. I can't reproduce it because last night I played for like an hour and never had a problem, then today I tried playing and it happened again.

This is known, and according to historic_brunno, might be caused by the game trying to "catch up" huge amounts of lag. But from what you say, it happened even while you didn't have high lag in the beginning of the game so it might be something else.

Oh, ok. today I did have some lag right before it "sped up" so maybe that's it. I don't remember if there was lag the last time.

I don't know if it's related, but today when it happened, I had just paused the game. Like, it was going slowly, then I paused to go get some food, and when I unpaused it everything immediately went superspeed.

I appreciate your help, both of you. It doesn't sound like this is something that'll be easy to fix, especially if I can't reproduce it. I'll play some more and pay close attention to when it happens from now on. I can't wait till we're able to save the game, 'cause then it won't be such a disappointment when I'm 40 minutes into the game and something like this happens. :)

Hi guys,

sorry for taking so long to reply, I appreciate you all taking the time to help me.

I think I found the solution! :)

I suddenly realized (don't know why I didn't think of it before) that almost all the games I play do have something in common--- I almost always reveal the map. Until now I never gave it a second thought, but I don't like trying to find the AI character so I would reveal the map almost every time I played a game.

After it came to mind, I wondered if that might be the common denominator to my problem, so I stopped doing that and tried playing with fog of war only or just black, and since then I haven't had a single recurrence of "Speedy Gonzales game".

Perhaps it has something to do with the computer having to show the entire map's movement at once? I don't know anything about programming and not much more about computers in general, but hey, I'm just glad to be able to play a game all the way through!

Then again, it could be unrelated to revealing the map, but either way the problem appears to be fixed, so I'm happy.

Good to hear it, but as you said, it might not be directly related to reveal map. Do you play against too many AI players? Large maps? It might help us track the core of the problem.

Just could reproduce the issue. Tasking a lot of units through a maze of small gaps caused the game to freeze 1 to 2 seconds, and indeed catching up the next turns.

This was without the map revealed.

There's nothing very bad about that catching up, but the engine should only catch up a few turns, and leave the rest as is.

I always play against one AI; usually a small or medium map. I usually use a skirmish map, primarily land ones with little water-- various civs, mostly Roman and Ptolemies. :) Since I stopped using reveal map and use 'explored' or the regular settings I have had some very minor "speed up" moments after lag but it's not that fast and lasts only a few seconds or so, pretty normal.

"Super Speed" did seem to always hit farther into the game, I want to say 30 minutes in when our civilizations were getting pretty big and there were quite a few moving units. Which makes sense just as regular lag 'catchup' but the superspeed would never end... at least till I gave up or died because I couldn't keep up.

Auron2401, um I think my graphics driver is "Nvidia Geforce", downloaded from the internet not long ago. I'm using windows 7 if that's of any importance. I don't know much beyond that, but I can try to find out anything else that'd be helpful.

An interesting thing about what you say is that I used to have a very similar phenomenon. It started after about 30-40 minutes and didn't end. But it has not occurred to me again for at least two years. It might have resurfaced by a relatively recent change (as my SVN is probably outdated for quite a few months).
