===[TASK]===[VOICES]=== Greek

Recommended Posts

Hello! As I said in this topic, I wanted to work on unit voices and remarked that current voices (created for Hellenes) use a modern pronunciation. However, I don't want to replace them, please read the other topic and give me input if you have some :)

In the meantime, I recorded voices. I used http://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Audio_Voice_List.

1) I recorded voices using the current, modern pronunciation. Theses records may be useful because for the moment, for male voices, we just have 4 sentences recorded...

Update (20/05): They can be found here.

2) I also recorded voices with ancient (commonly accepted) pronunciation.

Update (20/05): They can be found here.

Please share your thoughts!

Many thanks,

Itms

implodedok: I don't have access to this type of device. :(

Do you think this is a general problem in my files or it is just for some recordings? To really figure out how I could get rid of 'pops'

It sounds good!

I guess you can make a homemade pop filter with stockings and a hanger. It may get rid of some pop effect.

Some examples:

Just google "homemade pop filter" and you'll see ^_^

Ok, I personally think like Stan that this is a micro placement issue ^^

I'll record this again tomorrow, along with Latin sentences, to see if I can improve this :)

Lion: I've studied Latin at school and made some research about accurate pronunciation. But I'll open another topic with recordings, so you (and others) can give me your opinion!

And thanks everyone for your positives (so far) comments on these voices! :)

Hello,

I am playing the game for a long time now and I am trying to involve in many ways.

First of all I am a programmer(mostly working with fpgas though) and I am also greek.

I don't mean to seem rude or anything else and I know the correct pronounciation is a difficult part so I would like to see I you are interested in getting the voices from a native greek.

I'd be happy to do it, while I am still trying to figure some things from the game engine.

Cheers.

With great pleasure Yorgos! I just proposed this but it would be better to have a native speaking, and also to have different people to make the voices :)

Thanks in advance!

Ok then,

I just came back from a conference and I will prepare my equipment and I'll try to make it as soon as possible.

Glad I can help.

Should I replace 0 A.D.'s existing Greek male voices with the 'ancient (commonly accepted) pronunciation' voices posted by Itms above?

@Itms: How closely do your ancient voices resemble the pronunciation of the Greek female voices we have?

I need the community to help me out with this one, we don't have any ancient language specialists on the team :)

Well, my ancient pronunciation is rather different of the current modern female voice but it is easy to recognize it's the same phrases.

Perfect. I'm happy with that :)

I still need to hear thoughts on whether I should replace the existing Greek male voices with these new ones, or just add these to work alongside the others (despite the pronunciation differences).

sorry for taking that long time to post something, I was for some time in japan,

here's some of the contents,

I'll have to do some further research in order to post the rest of the voices.

There are some changes in some words,

for example the work land was γεωργεύσω, but I used the word καλλιεργώ

anyhoo, take a pick here and tell me what you think.

Hi Yorgos, thanks for these voices!

I have a doubt about the words you used, they seem to be modern Greek (especially επουλούμαι, I'm almost sure this is a modern conjugation). The idea would be to keep the ancient words, but in order to fit more "modern" factions such as Macedonians or Seleucids, we could choose to pronounce them in a modern way.

For instance, females in the game use a kind of modern pronunciation, rather different from the commonly accepted ancient one.
