0 A.D. Trailer(s)

Hi everybody,

As you may know, I have been thinking about creating 0 A.D. trailer(s) and other videos for a long time. It could really help get more people interested, particularly outside of the Linux gaming community. (They are great but we should shoot for even more fans, and from other communities too).

As the video editor spec says:

Video editors: Create several promotional, educational and other videos for 0 A.D. These may include an intro scene for 0 A.D., a general promotional trailer about the basic features of the game, an ad targeted to OS developers to join the project, and videos that document the development as new releases come out, perhaps explaining how certain parts of the game mechanics work. Candidates should be able to demonstrate past work in a portfolio. 3d graphics capabilities are a plus, but most videos should be perfectly doable with 2d graphics and in-game recording.

0 A.D. fan and mapmaker extraordinaire Pureon has kindly donated the following short videos:

Would be great to have more clips, or to make more maps available for recording shots from (I'm looking at you, Mythos_Ruler! :))

Also, I have head-hunted arthur01022 (the guy behind the UbuntuAds YouTube channel; application thread here) to create cool videos for 0 A.D. Anyone else who wants to help Arthur out is also invited.

Sound & music people like kinetik, markandersonaudio and others are also invited to contribute in their fields of expertise. Most existing tracks are available here.

Let's get this ball rolling.

Regarding this, I was wondering if you guys have any of the old screenshot scenes saved? I've only filmed a few clips of scenes that I've created over the last few months, but they only show a small percentage of 0AD! I can do more filming (now that I know how to), but I'd need some online file storage help.

My computer also gets choppy while capturing 0AD, as can be seen in the clips Jeru posted above, so maybe I'm not the best person to create the videos?

Ok, so if you want me to create those ads/trailers, I need videos of the game (in the best quality you can find/create, .mov / .mp4 recommended) , the text you want me to add to those videos, and some music from the game itself. Then, I'll be able to create a video that you'll like.

Thanks!

This is an idea for spreading out the word of 0 A.D. Saying that there aren't very many videos about it, why don't you have a monthly 0 A.D. video competition. They could have themes like nature, battle, architecture, etc,... Maybe to give more variety to the forumers, you could also have "create a building/unit" competitions too.

We tried to have a contest about a year ago for another thing, for sounds that would supposedly enter the game, and there were very few submissions. :)

Also, we would like some control on the message the video would convey, so it really represents the development team. That is hard to do without close collaboration.

Just started on something that took a somewhat different turn than what i had in my head. I was thinking

a close-up scene panning over one army, then the other, then while it zooms out the music breaks for a

bit and then some dramatic finale with the 2 of em going at eachother.

Somehow i ended up adding an electric guitar and some other electro stuff to it.

This one is probably too 'modern' or just downright odd:

And this is something slightly different but something im not too sure on being suitable either:

Thought i'd post em anyway. So here ye have it.

Very smooth for that resolution, what program did you use to screen capture?

I think the cinematic system in Atlas can be used to create a clip like the one created 3 years ago. Someone with good Atlas/0AD knowledge could build the stage (map), setup the cinematics, and then send the map to you to screen capture. I think that would work, although I haven't used the cinematic controls yet so I have no idea if they actually work or if they are saved with the map.

I listened to your audio tracks yesterday, and I'm a little conscious about the electro sounds. For me it's just a little too futuristic, I like the beginning bits, reminiscent of the era.

Although this was shot to demonstrate a little bug we've got in fullscreen mode on OSX, this was at 15fps in 2880x1620 and shrunk by YouTube. In the future I'll certainly just film at 30fps and 1920x1080 though.

Unfortunately audio doesn't quite work yet, so I'm not sure how much use this is to us just yet.

Mathijs, your video quality looks great though. :) Pureon, did you use a camera track for some of those clips or are you just really smooth with a mouse? Did we use a camera track of some sort for the first trailer?

I say this time we feature some of the other factions, preferably some that have until this point only appeared in screenshots (i.e. no Greeks, no Celts).

Hey Kimball, what 'demonstrate a little bug' video are you refering to?

Pureon, did you use a camera track for some of those clips or are you just really smooth with a mouse? Did we use a camera track of some sort for the first trailer?

I slowed the camera speed down in the 0AD config file, so yeah I cheated :)

I heard the first trailer was using the camera track system, which is why I assumed it was still working. Doesn't matter, it's not important enough to waste time fixing it now.

Ah ok, makes sense now. lol

I say this time we feature some of the other factions, preferably some that have until this point only appeared in screenshots (i.e. no Greeks, no Celts).

Is the aim not to attract people that haven't heard of 0AD yet, and therefore haven't seen the Celts or Greeks?
