  1. I don't know how hard it would be to code, but it would add to realism to give units with ranged weapons a limited amount of ammo. A Legionary would only have three pila, both because of weight and bulk. (That's how many they carried in real life.) An archer can carry more arrows in his quiver, and a slinger can also carry a fair number of projectiles. Once they've used up their ammo, they're no more than infantry, usually un-armored. Of course, after the combat they can re-arm, although that takes time.
  2. When you try to install with apt-get, do you get any error messages? I'm not familiar with Debian-based distros (I use Fedora.) but you can try: apt-get list 0ad and if apt-get is anything like dnf, it should either list it as Installed or Available. You might also consider asking on a support group for your distro because this might be an issue with your package management software.
  3. English longbowmen used both swords and hatchets to defend themselves during the Hundred Years War when the French came close enough. In at least one case, they'd prepared their position with sharpened stakes and used the mallets they'd used to embed them to good effect against the enemy.
  4. Throwing out a mechanism such as capturing buildings just because you don't like the way it's currently implemented isn't a good way to improve the game. If you don't like how capturing buildings works, how about making some constructive suggestions about improving it? And, in answer to Causative, with the exceptions of walls, gates and towers, buildings were generally destroyed after they'd been captured, because trying to tear down a house in the middle of combat was an easy way to get killed.
  5. One more thing: you might want to put a link to the .pdf version in the regular manual, or the FAQ so that people can find it. Thanx again for your prompt action.
  6. Thank you. I don't think I have two-finger scroll enabled, and I always use just my index finger. Alas, I'm using my desktop right now, not my laptop so I can't test it but I will when I have the chance and get back to you.
  7. I've just tried playing this on a laptop with a touchpad and ran into a problem: if I move my finger across the pad just right, it zooms in or out instead of moving the cursor, but I can't control when it happens or reliably reverse it. (I'm using Fedora 22 and Xfce if it matters.) I understand that this is OS dependent, but I'd like to know how this is controlled when you're using a mouse or trackball so that I can ask about it on the appropriate Linux support form. Once I've learned how to control this, I'll come back here and report so that other Linux users can benefit from it.
  8. I once worked for a company that distributed a software product named Precedent, and the name was trademarked. Later, another company selling a completely different program under the same name tried to make us stop using it on the grounds that they'd been using it before we were. Our CEO, who was also a lawyer, replied, telling them that they'd never bothered to register the name and that trying to make us stop using it was simply closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. (Yes, he used those exact words.) He did, however, offer to allow them to continue using the name as long as they weren't competing with us and stopped trying to enforce a trademark that didn't exist. We never heard back from them. If we did decide to use Tersus, our best bet would be to discuss this with the other company, show that we're not competing with them and get permission to use the name. We probably don't need it, but it's well worth making sure ahead of time instead of running into legal issues because we didn't bother to check.
  9. Does the name have to be Greek or Latin? How about Tyre, original home of the Carthaginians, or Thoth, Egyptian god of Knowledge, with would reference the Ptolemaic culture.
  10. Excellent! That looks like exactly what my friends will need. Thanx!
  11. Having a PDF version would be fine, even if you never printed it out. Just having it open so that you could look at it would be all that most people would need, and it probably wouldn't need updating very often.
  12. I'm also a beginner, but I don't think that the change in the kill ratio always means that the enemy's strategy isn't effective any longer. It could mean exactly the opposite: yours is getting better. As an example, you may be more selective as to which buildings to attack first, or you may have learned to concentrate your forces on a small detachment, defeating your foe in detail, rather than just having everybody pile in at once and hope your men are better.
  13. I'm still learning the game, but I'd like to show it to some friends and get them interested. Right now, I need to have the on-line manual keyed up in my browser so that I can pause the game and RTFM as needed. Alas, some of the people I want to get interested in this don't have a reliable Internet connection, so that's not always possible. Is there a version of the full manual that they can download (or I can download for them) that they can use off-line?
  14. Thank you. I have the manual bookmarked, so that I can pause the game and RTFM as needed. I'll have to remember to look at that Demo Map. I want to learn enough of the game to be playing it at the Girl Gamer Convention at the beginning of April, and have something better to offer than simply trial and error until you work things out for yourself.
  15. If there's a hidden tutorial, I'd like to find it. I can't figure out how to claim more ground, or even scout in certain directions. I want to take this to a gamer's convention and maybe get others interested in it, but right now, there's not enough I could possibly teach anybody else to make them interested in trying it in single-player mode, let alone multi!
