  2. Hi there! Probably you noticed that there were not updates for some time. Unfortunately I was quite busy with other stuff and in the future I don't think I will have more time to dedicate on this (at least for ~8months). Therefore I would say that this experiment finishes here and I am happy about the outcomes. Some WFG members are already working on porting the main branch of 0ad to more recent version of Spidermonkey, so don't worry about this. Last micro update. I tried to do a very rough and inaccurate performance test just looking at the framerate. It seems that my modifications reduced a bit (not dramatically) the FPS. In my opinion this is due to the fact that many optimizations of the GC parameters were done for SM45 and are not useful anymore or even counterproductive for most recent versions of Spidermonkey. I think that there will be the need to spend some time in profiling the VM to get the best achievable performance.

  4. I would say it's more a matter of making things easy for oneself/doing something that works in most cases than ignorance, the places where people use latin are probably fewer than where people would deem the modern meaning of those letters/sounds to be inappropriate. Sure, that's pretty mild even if used as profanity I would say, so I'll remove it from the censored words.

  5. some people just like to play singleplayer and build empire for hours before finishing game so they may welcome this as the part of "roleplaying". being able to name cc could be useful in the future for campaigns. If there will be consensus it is something we want to implement we will. But even then it would have low priority I think. ping @bb_ @wraitii @Stan` @Freagarach some opinion?

I want to translate 0 A.D. into this lang, but this lang is not in transifex, let's say, "bank of languages", so I'm asking You: Can You make Silesian lang translatable? It will make me and a lot of Silesians players happy and we will be "like in home" :)

  27. Dude, learn to paragraph (and avoid netspeak), this is unreadable. Rating is fine, community is small and rated games are not common. Biggest issue is stale players holding to their rating and not playing. Simplest solution is to decrease rating by X (e.g. 50) per month of inactive rated games against players at least 100 rating below. This would be a mechanic similar to a 'season reset', not usually needed on active playerbases but I think would be applicable here.

  28. The Toltec and Inca ones could be fully painted like mexica one. Some references for emblems/banners: Toltec emblem, (Based on a Teotihuacan glyph, not sure how accurate it is): Reconstructed Inca banner (For rallypoints): Maybe the unpainted part of the Toltec emblem could be purple or dark red ? Based on this civ 5 mod: For Incas you could make the unpainted part of the shield a pinkish red: Or maybe use a gold disk for emblem instead (As far as i know Incans used square shields):

  32. Four wheeled chariot driven by cattle could be a possibility. The two attested animals in use for hard work and transport during the iron age are the horse and the ox (boeuf): The Gallic chariots were diverse and the most renown were those adapted for horses, although this is not necessarily the kind of chariot used by the merchants:

  33. There is a good relief found in Italy depicting a Celtic chariot: No doubt that the naked warrior is a real thing in Gallic society. However, I really disagree with Barry Cunliffe's opinion about the oneness of fighting naked. The Gaesatae are recorded only one time as fighting naked and the account at Telamon seems to suggest an exception more than a common thing for them. Their king is Viridomaros/Britomaros and is described as bearing a colorful armor at the battle of Clastidium. So I don't see the "oneness" in that. Everything suggests it was also perform as an act of individual bravado, so I would be careful to associate it to any group identity. A larger excerpt from Diodorus Siculus (hist. 5, 29): A small note about the interpretation of their name, Gaesatae/Gaisatoi doesn't necessary mean "spear-men", the same way hastati doesn't always designate spearmen and samurai doesn't always designate attendants. The use of a word and its etymology is not the same thing, we know that in old Irish gaiscedach can designate a warrior or a champion in general even if the root originally derives from gae, the spear. Finally the duel of Manlius Torquatus is probably made up by several Roman authors. First of all, the Roman is described by Livy as being armed of a Spanish gladius, which is anachronic for 361 BC. The same for the long and heavy sword of the Gaul, a topos completely anachronic for 361 BC when the La Tène swords weren't that long. Livy described the Gaul as wearing colored clothes while Aulus Gellius described the Gaul naked with two swords (which is completely absurd). Dion Cassius says it was the king of the Gauls while the others do not. The oldest record comes from Cicero (and still, this is two centuries after the event) where is says: So it seems the reality is unclear. There was a duel but that's all. I don't think my eyes recovered from the chapter 3 yet. Personally I find this book not that much useful for anybody wanting to portray better the Celts because in there, Barry Cunliffe is mixing stuff from the Neolithic to the Early Middles Ages, from different cultures in addition with his own beliefs and certitudes.

  34. Thanks MarcusAurelius for your efforts. If the best players of a team are unavailable at the time of the game (because of unplanned events for example), then the games will remain unbalanced. Some players might be able to participate for one or two games then have other things to do. Not sure that having fixed teams over several weeks can work well. Other alternatives to improve balance could be to adopt a format close to the Sunday pro games and change team every week depending on which players are available to play. Adopt a system of handicap. Using something like the ratings that go2die nicely compiled to classifify players in groupe and impose some restrictions about the civilizations/starting ressources/positions (or any other potential starting advantages that we could think of...) that the team can take. The worst team would have 0 handicap. A team only slightly better with a handicap of 1 would have one player that cannot take a top tier civilization etc... The system might be a bit tricky to define but I guess it could help make more balanced games in a situation with a limited number of players and where the outcome of a team tourney can be easily predicted before it starts.

  36. The related ticket is https://trac.wildfiregames.com/ticket/995. The patch I uploaded there is rather outdated and probably heading in the wrong direction. We do have some related code in the code base: the code handling splash damage on catapults/boltshooter and deathdamage of the iber fireship. Probably a proper implementation consists of creating a new component handling the trample. This is implemented in https://code.wildfiregames.com/D1838

  37. Do you guys thinks rams are too powerful? If not how do you counter them?
    1 point
  38. Rams are not OP, that nerf is not necessary, you dont need to avoid destroying building. Currently there are many ways to counter them, but still are the best siege machines. Almost every pro player pick them to destroy enemy buildings. The problem is that rams also do a lot of damage to the infantry units(that doesn't make much sense), which I think is the real problem. They should fix that or improve the catapults making them arm or disarm faster or even turning 360 degrees when they're armed. The damage caused by a rock coming from the sky is greater than that of a thrunk hitting.

  39. Hi @audrey and welcome to the forums :) Traders in 0 A.D. need two markets to trade between. So first you right-click the market of you ally and then you right-click a market of you own. The reason for this is that one can trade between two arbitrary markets, instead of just between one of your allies' and your closest market (as is the case in AoE2).

  40. Arrrg forgot to include me map of Romanos Bay Cuba...it will probably make it into the next release. Meanwhile random is playable. Try: Map Type: Random Map filter: Naval maps Select Map: Pirates Map Size: <Captain's choice> Biome: Caribbe Population Cap: 100 or 150 or 200 Game Speed: Island-style (optionally, Drunken Sailor) Regicide is fun because your hero is quite charismatic and can capture just about anything .. but basic (conquest) victory condition plays ok too.

  43. It has been like that for a years now. Why is it still not changed?
    1 point
  44. In mod(last version 1.0.5), rams cant hit units and farms. Decreased movement speed too, to look more realistic. The problem is not in the rams. It's the lack of adequate units to fight them. In vanilla we do not have champion units, which could easily handle rams. And the few units we have are easily knocked over by ranged units.

  45. if rams wouldnt be op, match will last days in some cases xD

  46. Notice that there are basically no ranged units in the list. Ranged units typically only deal pierce attack, which is completely useless against rams. I've often seen people trying to destroy rams with a bunch of archers and that's when they start to complain. You'll usually have access to either citizen-soldier sword infantry (Romans, Iberians, Kushites), cavalry (Celts, Athens, Persia), or both (Mauryans), so it's a good idea to have some of those prepared when you expect a ram attack. There are some civilizations that either need a special Town Phase building for swordsmen (military colony for Ptolemies, mercenary barracks for Carthage), or you might need to get to the City Phase first for better ram counters (Macedonians only have cavalry spearmen as a usable ram counter in the Town Phase, which can make it harder for them to defend against rams). Once you get to the City Phase, you can make stronger counters. Rams are perfect as long as they aren't destroyed first by the enemy rams. An elephant wins a direct fight against a ram but it can't be garrisoned in a fortress for a surprise ungarrison (and yeah, we are only talking about the melee elephant, not the elephant archer, which is as useless as other ranged units). Champion swordsmen and spearmen are very good but slow to train and expensive. A hero swordsmen can one-handedly become deadly to several rams. If you had the possibility and time to make catapults, they can destroy rams too, but only if you have more of them and if they can finish the job before the ram gets to them. If you failed to prepare a strong ram counter, there are still several backup options. Spearmen are somewhat usable but significantly worse than swordsmen. Women can destroy one or two unprotected rams quite efficiently (better than pikemen), but they die fast if there are any enemy soldiers near. Slingers are one of the few ranged units that are usable too (they deal a small amount of crush damage), but only if you have a lot of them.

  47. Counters to ram by effectiveness: other rams, elephants, sword units, spear units, women and the least slingers.
