  2. I could easily imagine the "auditorium", which probably functioned as some sort of assembly building for nobles, as the place where nobles came together to make important decisions, like hiring a bunch of naked fanatics for the upcoming campaign or whatever.

  3. Amerindian I think to challenge the Zapotec's we need the Amerindians in the Terra Maga mod. The major external threat from the north are hunter gatherer tribes, that farmed when they could, from northern Mexico's deserts. The Mesoamericans called them Chichimeca which may mean dog people. It’s hard to see how the Chichimeca could be a threat if there is not an influx of peoples from further north replacing losses. One major Amerindian tribe in Arizona is the Chiricahua a similar sounding word. Could and Aztec simply messed up the tribal name creating a new hybrid word? Phil Barker and Richard Brodly Scott in DBM army lists [De Bellis Miltitudinis] raises the possibility that they may have been from the Pueblo cultures. They cite linguistic connections as I do above. They don't give useful references or argument on page 41 of book 3. Another author, Aurelio Locsin III in the Gurps Aztec RPG argues that they may have been southern coastal plains Indians. Known as Atakapans [Texas/ Rio Grande]. Essentially the same thing. These are not primary sources. We are just about the only games project that does that. This is all also outside the time frame, post 500 AD. However, there are north facing defences in the Zapotec valleys. The technology it not different from 300 BC to 1600 AD. Trade with Amerindians north of the Rio Grande did occur. Amerindians also fit the game in another way, they had metals. Most do not know this. While they did not smelt any metal, there were native copper rocks in the glacial till across North America. Native copper does not need to be refined or smelted. These were cold hammered into jewellery, sacred items and tools. Copper weapons were found; often axes, tomahawk, knives and scrapers. Copper does not make good swords, so swords are rare. Corn does not need sickles to harvest so sickle swords are not found. Metal weapons may have been limited because it was too valuable to waste or risk and lose on the battlefield. Not all tribes had metal but not all European towns, villages and tribes had metals either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallurgy_in_pre-Columbian_America#Northern_America North America did not have a written script. However, wampum was a proto-script. Wampum were beads forming a 2-dimensional mat. The colour patterns conveyed names, a few patterns were either ideograms or places. All tribes and family had a wampum name. It was mainly for treaties and deals. There are papers on it being an idiographic memory aid and proto script I'll see if I can find them. It was not money, but it was mistaken for money and used as money by the white people [that could not read it.] The most famous wampum were treaty documents not payments, but some were gibberish that the Indians politely accepted. It was never a full language like others, but it was heading there. Several written languages were produced by Christian missionaries on contact. Some draw on the wampum patterns. So not a written language but then we have no translatable Xiongnu or Scythian scripts or works either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wampum Another reason to do the Amerindians that we get a nomad civilisation without the horse. That is something no other game has tried. Note: I do want them to have horses in the game but not at the start and not easily, obtained with a Hero unit. The main draft animal in North America was the dog. These pulled sleds in winter, north of Kansas & Kentucky where winter snow was reliable. In summer and south of those states where snow was rarer, they used Travios. Travios is two poles harnessed to a dog (or horse later) with the other ends dragging on the ground. It had a deck of sticks, slats, netting, leather or a basket. The load was only 20 to 30 kg, but the tribes often had several dogs per family. Indian tribes going cross country travelled light. Their use of dogs may be the reason for why the Chichimeca were called dog people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travois They also used canoes on the rivers and most central American Indians were riverine tribes (or lake shores) before the horse. The southern tribes had adobe, mud brick, with earthen monuments. The northern woodland and river tribes had wood and matting structures. Log and pole structures. Palisades were common. Nomad structures were Wigwams. Small domed huts of bent branch and matting. Tipi's of leathers. The Tipi poles doubled as tarvois poles on the move. Wigwams. I'm thinking either two civilisations in an appropriate mod or one civilisation with two architecture styles triggered by a toggle on the town centre. Units do not significantly differ from north to south which is why the one civ with two styles is an option. This would allow an exploration of an interesting peoples. It would allow innovation and allow the Zapotec's to face a historically accurate foe. P.S. If this is in the wrong place someone fix it and teach me a archain art of navigating the site. lol.

  5. If we consider them as fanatics warriors, they could be recruited from the sanctuary. It will fit nicely I think since the new sanctuary is more warlike than the current one. The auditorium/assembly should be a third phase building, permitting to recruit the champions, maybe carnyx too, new technologies etc. We know for sure thanks to Caesar that Gallic "senators" and aristocrats fought in the battlefield. It could be. The only thing is that this kind of building is something developed in the late phase of the La Tène culture, when it was in a urbanization stage. Thus a third phase building. While the Gallic naked warriors are known from the third century BC, before the urbanization, and it is expected to be a second phase unit in the game. Maybe the assembly/auditorium is better suited to unlock regional units (political alliance).

  6. If I might give a recommendation for the Spartans, they were known to braid their hair during battle, as is attested by Plutarch and Herodotus. I think that incorporating that aspect into the game would be a worthwhile addition. As for skiritai, there isn't a lot of information I am aware of from ancient sources. Thucydides mentions their role in the battle of Mantinea and Xenophon briefly mentions their purpose in his work Cyropaedia and also eludes to their fighting in the Hellenica. Nothing from them as far as I remember relate to what they wore. Since they were known for doing operations that would be difficult for soldiers that were heavily encumbered, 0 A.D. interprets their equipment to be lighter than most, but it would be hard to substantiate that conclusion with any evidence from primary sources.

  7. Supposed to be a champion but I guess there could be one evolution I wonder though where it will be recruited if the tavern is replaced by the auditorium and what the auditorium will be for. I need to add carnyx maybe shingle roofs and then commit it

  9. The art and coding are separate you know adding civs is mostly art related while the performance and battalions is code all with different people who actually do the work involved besides we are all volunteers who really just do what we individually want to do Enjoy the Choice

  11. Or if trees are made using leaf's and branches as props and later use geometry instancing, certanly trees can't become 100% low poly because flora is the visual core on maps, i mean ugly land textures + ugly flora = The new Flat AoE copy.

  12. Just draw some yourself take some pictures, easy peasy

  13. Most of the textures come from the game itself, though they are mostly in DDS format. Then the rest come from open source places like wikimedia.

  14. Nakedness from an Indo-European view is something common and is making reference to a kind of animality and natural force. Berserkir are often depicted as naked as well. Nakedness is often associated with homeric warriors and Greek art. 7th and 6th century hoplites are often represented as naked, notably by the Spartans and the Etruscans here, here and here (+bonus). Clearly, the thing has continued by being an artistic license but it seems that it has roots from an older ethos. Greek art, historiography and mythology are full of these archaisms about nakedness and furious warriors. Less known, exterior from the Indo-European world, some Assyrians warriors have been described as naked enraged warrior in the Tukulti-Ninurta Epic: “They are furious, raging, taking forms strange as Anzu (Assyrian eagle-dragon). They charge forward furiously to the fray without armor, They had stripped off their breastplates, discarded their clothing, They tied up their hair and polished… weapons, The fierce heroic men danced with sharpened weapons. They blasted at one another like struggling lions…” Nakedness in religious function is also known in India with the gymnosophists (as they were called by the Greeks). But in the case of the Wales mythology, it is making reference to youthfulness and to championship. Irish mythology shows that furious warriors can take any rights through their strength, even women and properties. Tacitus account of the Germanic Chatti suggest the same, where these warriors are sacred, start any battle and have the right to go where they want. In my opinion, fighting naked is a mean to access to higher position and higher recognition. Maybe it opens the right to enter the retinue of some nobles or some warrior brotherhoods. Probably it was something more common in youth peoples to start their warrior career. How much it is related to rituals and religion? If we look into the Germanic culture, there are rituals and rites before acting like a heroic warrior. Some kind of oaths to take in front of its comrades, an offering to do, an animal to skin or a dance to perform... there are indications for all of these.

  15. It's still a work in progress. I'll share it in the forum for public scrutiny very soon (it hasn't passed any reviews yet), but the idea is to have an RTS adaptation of an actual Gallic sanctuary, the sanctuary at Gournay-sur-Aronde in particular (but it has parallels in other sanctuaries as well).

  16. The artist took his inspiration from the re-enactment of a french association: Excepted the infamous round shield, the illustration is legit. These kind of attachments in the front of the horses are plausible. An example from a relief in North Italy:

  17. @wackyserious If you want a variant for the Britons: And if you want variation for the head, you can use the bird helmet from Tintignac as a variant too. But for me, the druid is ok.

  24. I'd rather they fix performance issues and implement formations/battalions before they start throwing in a thousand factions they can't and shouldn't wast time trying to balance when they've still so many missing features. This isn't a grand vision, it's just moar civs, and I'm a little disappointed to see such an uninspired suggestion coming from you wow, you're much more creative than this.

  25. Maybe @Anaxandridas ho Skandiates could add his changes to a mod to preserve his vision and then discuss with others which can be merged into vanilla
