Villager
The villager is the worker unit for the Edain and performs all manual chores that arise in everyday Edainic life, from tilling fields to producing leather and wool and also mining for mineral deposits. They build all kinds of structures from Great Halls, Homesteads and Tanneries to military buildings like Armouries, Barracks and Strongholds. The Edainic Villagers can be trained much faster than their elven counterparts, due to an upgrade called “Three Houses of the Atani” which basically reflects their large numbers as they entered the wide reaches of Beleriand, where they became the closest allies of the Noldor in the First Age of the Sun.

Abilities: Attack (Melee), Repair, Build, Hunt, Gather, Garrison

Scout

Scout
The Scout has the important roles of an explorer and of a surveyor. Riding on one of the sturdy horses originally bred in the Vales of Anduin, they are not quite as nimble as the Noldorin Scouts, but their tireless beasts always finish their journey regardless the distance. Using their “Survey” skill they can increase their line of sight and thus spotting otherwise obscured details far earlier (such as enemy troops) but this also forces them to stand still. Scouts can also gain the ability to Hunt after the upgrade “Art of the Hunt” is researched at the Great Hall, which adds nicely to the food resources.

Abilities: Attack (Melee), Hunt, Survey

Scout

Banner-bearer
Carrying high the banners of the Houses of the Edain, the Banner-bearers are an important part of any military formation. When grouped with a Captain and other military units the player can access the advanced formations which TLA offers. Each formation gives a different bonus to the grouped units and additionally the Banner-bearer raises the Morale of his assigned formation. When not grouped, a Banner-bearer just boosts the Morale in a given area; multiple Banner-bearers can combine their effect on Morale, but only up to a certain fixed value. Each Banner-bearer also has his “Rally Troops” skill that further boosts Morale in his area for a limited time. They lack any kind of offensive capabilities, so it is sensible to protect them from harm.

Herald
The Diplomatic System in TLA requires special units – in this case the Herald. Heralds are mounted on swift horses and are trusted vassals of Edainic Lords. They are well learned in other languages and manners have acquired the art of negotiating with other civilisations. Heralds must be used in order to make diplomatic contact and to establish an Embassy at any foreign civilisation with a friendly enough relationship level. An Embassy lets you make direct diplomatic contact with another civilisation without the need of sending an additional Herald. When tasked with a mission the Herald becomes invulnerable until completed, but it's generally not advisable and possibly harmful to one’s own foreign relations to attack Heralds of other civilisations.

Abilities: Conduct Diplomacy, Establish Embassy

Scout Guard
Guards are among the most important units at the beginning of any game. They are cheap and fast to train and may prove vital to protecting your settlements and territorial interests. The player can assign them to patrol their buildings, Caravans and Work Carts or manually defined “Guard Areas”. Armed with a spear, a shield, light armor and a flowing cape they are a common sight in every settlement and form the backbone of the Edainic military. Although they are not among the elite troops they still perform a very important strategic role in defending and securing the homeland of the Edain.

Abilities: Attack (Melee), Guard, Patrol, Garrison

Spearman
The Spearmen of the Edain are the front-line version of the Guard unit – they are more heavily armoured and wield a deadly spear and a large shield. They are best used in defensive formations against swift-moving enemy forces or as shock troops against tight enemy formations. Spearmen usually form the backbone of any army the Edain can field and they also excel as garrison of any kind of fortification.

Abilities: Attack (Melee), Garrison
