1) TNT (Tanít or Tinít): Assimilated sometimes to the egyptian goddess Isis. She was an extremely important goddess for the punics. They had a special sign to represent her: a buddy like those of Messenger with a horizontal ray separating the head of the body. (-t is the mark of feminine in Punic)
2) The supreme god was B'L (Báal) that appears in multitude of Punic names like:
Hannibal (HN B'L) 'favored of Bá al' Asdrubal (' SDRB'L) 'the aid of Bá al'
B'L is a semitic word that can be translated simply like 'Lord'. This god in his different aspects was called B'L HMN (Bá al Hamman= The Lord of heat) or B'L ?M? (Bá al Shamash = The Lord Sun). Baal was worshipped under two ways, beneficent and destructive. On the one hand he gave light and warmth to his worshippers; on the other hand the fierce heats of summer destroyed the vegetation he had himself brought into being. At Carthage the female consort of Baal was termed Pene-Baal, 'the face' or 'reflection of Baal'.
3) ´ŠTR Probably pronounced 'Ishtar' transcribed by the Greeks like Astarté and that the Hebrews took like person name 'eŠTheR' (Esther). This goddess was assimilated absolutely to Aphrodite-Venus.
4) Naturally we have to ML(K)QRT (Melqart) Where QaRT is the word "city", that also appears in QaRT HaDŠáT> Carthago, that is to say, 'New City'. Peculiarly Carthago Nova in Hispania would mean 'the new new-city' :-)
In Summary:
B'L (Báal) - equivalent to Jupiter
TNT (Tinit) - vaguely equivalent to Isis
ML(K).QR.T (Melqart) - vaguely equivalent to Mercury
'ŠTR (Ishtar) - equivalent to Aphrodite-Venus
The Carthaginians were more religious than the Greeks and the Romans, at least the abundance of "theophoro names" (names combining the ones of the gods) shows it. Another subject is the great number of sacrifices of children during the third Punic war in a desperate act to successfully obtain the aid of Báal and Tinit.
At one time I dedicated myself to reading tens of Punic votive inscriptions, to know what the desperate Carthaginians requested of their Gods during the third Punic war; the truth is that all inscriptions are so repetitive that I did not learn much on that, good perhaps a little more knowledge of the Phoenician language, that differs from the Hebrew in short and identifiable points according to people that know more than I. In fact, I used a dictionary of Hebrew for such necessity.

| We are using Tanit as the civ's principal theme symbol for buildings and other accoutrements in the game. |

| BTW the above text delivered to us by Alejandro "Piteas" Carneiro, himself a professor of ibero-romano-hellenistic history at a uinversity in Spain. He was also a principal resource for the collection of information and data leading to the design of the Iberians civilisation in 0ad. |

| Excellent. Has he followed our game closely? If so, what does he think about it? |

| Who wrote that was really sick. There is no proof that Carthage made any Sacrifices of Children of any kind. The only account of this is a single Greek writer from Sicily who wrote about the Sacrifices that took place in Sicily and put Carthage into his perverted Stories, which the romans endorsed later on. |

Hmm, looks like you have never heard of a the excavations in Carthage that uncovered almost 20,000 urns containing the bodies of small children and babies. The dates of the deaths of the children corelate with the well-being in the city- during times of war or poor harvests child sacrifice seems to have been more frequent.
The Carthaginians were Phoenicians, and there is substantial evidence to prove that the Phoenicians practiced child sacrifice. Why should their colonies be any differant? |

Very substantial evidence for the Phoenicians. Many sources, including the Old Testament (for example), mention child sacrifice as actually fairly commonplace among most of the various nations living in the Levant at the time.
I don't think he's trying to degrade the Carthaginians with this, it's simply a matter that's been mostly proven to be true over time. There's actually a (for the time period and culture) relatively large amount of evidence provided. |

Your "argument" has gone the way of the belief that the Norse people did not encounter North America prior to Columbus' expedition.
That is, you are still in the 1930's my friend.

| It is very likely that this so-called fact of child sacrifice was the same racest info given to all and I say all "things" Nubian. Even today with the Tarzan and Dark Jungle stories of flesh eating and child sacrifices of the heathens of Africa from the late 20's to the late 60's still sell. but true history can't be so easily hidden. Only when people wish to include something fake in his-story do they make this claim of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians being the same peoples! THEY HAD THE SAME GODS YOU IDIOT! The stories of the 20,000 urns containing bodies of children should have been the first clue. And as for your "old testaments" or "old stories" were mostly stolen works from The Coming Forth By Day and Night, otherwise known as The Book Of The Dead, you know the Cufu Texts, which predates your "old testamonies" by 3000 or more years before the making of the world in Genisis of your old testaments. The rest was added and taken away as needed to keep you blinded with faith. Don't be-LIE-ve (believe) me just google: A Chronology Of The Bible by Yosef Ben-Jochannan. Now Caesar and Titus Ultor (The Twice Defeated), go do your re-search! Halla! |
