General Contest Information
Wildfire Games is pleased to announce its first community contest, ‘Get In The Game!’ It is truly a delightful experience hearing your warriors cry as they charge into battle, and it will require many unique voices to properly achieve this effect. Several battle cries will be chosen and mixed to represent different sized groups of soldiers, selected based on quality and accuracy. To gather the necessary sound assets, we've decided to employ the help of our community in our ‘Get In The Game’ contest, giving you the chance you have your very own voice in 0 A.D.!
Using the included phonetic pronunciation guide and referring to the guidelines below, contestants will be able to submit up to two audio files of their recorded battle cries, limited to one per listed faction. The clips will be judged by members of both the History and Sound Departments to determine which clips will be used in the game. Winners will be chosen based on the quality of the recording and the accuracy of the pronunciation.. The top 10 entries (5 per category) will have their voice appear as an integral part of the largest freeware RTS game. The winners (1 from each civ, 2 total) will also receive a subscription to Ancient Warfare Magazine! To get started, please read the guidelines below. Once you are ready to submit your entry, click the link at the bottom of this page.
General Contest Guidelines
• The contest will run between 28 February 2009 and 21 March 2009 • Wildfire Games team members aren't allowed to enter • Contestants must be registered at the Wildfire Games Web Forum. • Contestants must use their Wildfire Games Web Forum user name and chosen race when naming their entries. i.e.: Username_Racename.ogg & Username_Racename.zip • Contestants may submit only one (1) sound file per race (2 files per contestant total) • The file will contain one individual “race-specific phrase” plus one “generic yell” only • The two races to choose from are the Hellenes, and the Celts. No more than two total entries per contestant. • Only pre-approved "phrases" (listed below) are acceptable. • Contestants must choose one "phrase" from the suggested race-specific "phrase" list for their entry. • Entries must be in the .OGG (Ogg Vorbis) file format. All entries saved in another format must be converted to .OGG before submitting. (Oggs within .ZIP & .RAR can also be used to save space) • Entries must be no longer than 60 seconds in length. • By entering the contest, contestants grant nonexclusive rights to Wildfire Games to copy, display, distribute, and make derivative works of the submitted audio; and also to grant these rights to others. •If you are confused about anything, please post your questions in this thread before submitting your entry.
General Contest Definitions
Race-Specific Phrase: A battle cry using specific words deemed accurate by WFG (see below) Generic Yell: This is your generic battle cry plain and simple. Harness your inner soldier and let it rip! (examples “GAAARRRR”, “AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGH!!”)
Race-Specific Phrases Celtic battle cries
Celtic battle cries remain a topic of much dispute. While we know that the Celts had battle-cries and indeed full fledged songs the words have not survived the test of time. These songs appeared to have been the recitation of ancient myths, such as the exploits of Lugos for instance.
What we do know however is that before battle was joined the Celts would make a effort to stir up as much noise as possible. Screaming, braying, and taunting were all part of the ceremony. In addition the Celts would bang their weapons and shields together, sometimes staging mock fights right on the battle line. The high point was the blowing of the carnyx, trumpets, and horns (even the lyre on occasion). One point that the Romans admired and feared was barritus chanting, a deep, loud noise (for it appears to not to have had words) that built up to a deafening crescendo. This chanting was adopted by the Germanic tribes as well and through them brought to Rome.
As we don't have all that much specific info on the Celtic battle cries we've provided a list below of Celtic words which might or might not have been used as battle cries, feel free to use them.
Celtic words
Rix: ricks (king or ruler, a popular component in Gallic names)
Solduros: sul-duhr-ohs (the devoted ones, the elite bodyguards of the greater Gallic tribal confederacies)
Gaesatae: guy-sah-tay (spearmen, the famous naked fanatics of popular imagination, originally a mercenary unit whose style became emulated)
Neitos: nee-yet-ohs (soldiers, the well armed and armored professionals admired by Rome in the Gallic Wars)
Leuce Epos: luke-ay-pos (light cavalry, the most famous of the Gallic horsemen and extensively copied by Rome)
Milnaht: mel-not (great men, the feared swordsmen of the Belgae used as mercenaries in Gaul)
Iaosatae: yo-sah-tay (sling-men, the slingers of the Gallic Celts)
Brihentin: bree-hen-tin (knights, the heavy Gallic cavalry also copied by Rome)
Hellenic battle cries
Undoubtedly the best known battle-cry of the ancient world was the cry of eleleu! used by the Athenians as a means of imitating the cry of the owl, the animal most associated with the city's patron deity Athena. Pronunciation of this cry is a matter of some dispute but most likely was pronounced e-le-leph!
A more universal cry used by other Hellenic poleis was the cadence chant of Zeys, Sotir, Niki! (Zeus, Saviour, and Victorious!) most famously used at Cunaxa by the Hellenic mercenaries in the service of the Achaemenid pretender Kurush the Younger. It was pronounced as zoos, so-tare, nee-kee!
Recording Guidelines
• Care must be taken to ensure a proper audio signal (i.e. recording level/volume must be within the range of -20 dBFS and -3 dBFS) *See Diagram Below • Care must be taken to minimize background noise during recording (I.e. no TV in the background, people talking, dog barking, computer fan hum ect..) • Entries must be submitted in the .OGG (Ogg Vorbis) file format, set to standard VBR (128 kb/s) . *See Links Below
To ensure your recording will be accepted please be sure to watch your audio levels during recording. This makes sure that your recording is not too quiet or too loud. In your audio software you will find a level meter. (See below) Make sure when recording your levels are between the -20 and -3 deciBel mark. This ensures that your audio will be accepted.
Many of you will be recording using Audacity. The diagram below will help you locate your level meters and ensure you are working at the right level within Audacity.

When you submit your files, please make sure you follow the guidelines. And remember that you can't use a copyrighted clip from someone else. We got a clip that I hope was a joke from one user, it was a copy of "This is Sparta", which not only is copyrighted (not necessarily the phrase, but the recording from the movie) but also is not even close to the phrases we've listed above |

Hmm, while we haven't mentioned it in the guidelines (forgot about it *doh* ) team members aren't allowed to enter. Feel free to record a battle cry and send it to Matt in any case, but for obvious reasons we can't let team members participate, I mean we couldn't let anyone from the team win as that would look unfair (Will add that to the guidelines though, someone else might wonder too.) |

Thus far we haven't got very many entries, so I really suggest you take the chance to send something in as there's a really big chance you'll win as it seems now at least And I gotta say that the competition is harder for the Hellenes, so for an even greater chance to win you should try the Celts (And for those who've already sent in an entry for one civilization: you can enter with one for the other civilization too, then you have two chances to win too ) |
